Taang Shifu (汤师父), Paradigm Mall Food Review

TaangShifu has always look like a posh Chinese restaurant to me which I daren't walk in.
 I later discovered that the prices of their dishes aren't as expensive as I thought even though the outlook of it leans towards that way.
I had a chance for a delightful food review session at the Paradigm Mall branch one evening and took the opportunity to savor it's noms. TaangShifu's concept is healthy eats and are Chinese type of food. All items

To start off with, I ordered a  Honey Pomelo Tea (RM6.90) to wet my parched throat.
The drink intrigued me with it's unique tasty flavor that I took a liking to. Positive comments about the other drinks my fellow compatriots ordered shows that TaangShifu's drinks too are a noteworthy item on their menu.

The dishes came pouring out as soon as they were given the green light to serve and here is what we had that night.

Cordycep Flower and Japanese Mushroom with Sliced Pork (RM38.90):
Meant to improve respiratory function & to treat asthma, cough empysema. Also to improve brain memory and reduce blood sugar & blood pressure. Pork is tender and mushrooms are chewy.

Angelica Dang Gui Stewed Pork topped on Rice (RM7.90):
To go with our meat and veggies served to us. Said to regulate blood circulation.

Another rice provided to us is the Dried Scallops & Petite Abalone Mixed Rice (RM16.90):
I liked this soupy rice more than the dry one. Makes it nicer and easier to eat. :P
Health benefit mentioned is that it restructure spleen and rejuvenate mentality.

Hsien Tsai with Wolfberry Simmered in Soup (RM14.90):
Well, nothing unusual nor special about it. Just how a vegetable would taste like. But it has a very clear type of taste. Health benefit mentioned is that it's rich in calcium and strengthens bone structure.

Snow Mountain Lotus Black Chicken Soup (RM38.90):
The Black Chicken don't have much taste to it. It's more towards it's mushroom and soup which gives out an herbal taste. Known to regenerate brain cells and act as antioxidants.

Taang Shifu Signature Soup (RM38.90):
Packed with quite a number of ingredients. Ginseng Roots, American Ginseng and Cordyceps, Scallops, Mushrooms, Needle Mushrooms, Fish Maw and a variety of Chinese herbs that are boiled and stewed for 8 hours, it provided quite a powerful herbal taste with all the ingredients complementing it except for the mushroom which lets off a little sweetness in the taste. Good for recuperating energy, revive vitality and improve the immune system.

This here is the Home Braised Pork Belly in Rich Dark Sauce:
Meant to eat with the Bread and cucumber and that crunchy bits of stuff there in dispersing the richness of the Pork Belly. Priced at RM22.90 and is said to regenerate the digestive system.

Here's my favorite among all that I've tried there.
It's the Stewed Fish Head with Wine & Chuan Xiong (RM28.90). Really love the sauce that goes with the fish. Just makes it such a pleasure to keep on eating it. Known to regenerate "Qi" and improve blood circulation.

Broccoli with Sliced Abalone and Scallops (RM23.90):
Fresh and crunchy broccoli and scallops. Of course vegetables are good for you. Don't need to be told of it's benefits. LOL. It's mentioned that it enhances functionality of the digestive system.

Dried Scallop Spare Rib Soup with Cordyceps (RM23.90):
Unlike the Signature Soup, this has a way weaker herbal taste than that. Most likely it could be because the Signature Soup has loads of ingredients boiled with it. Known to benefit the lungs and nourish the body.

Eight Treasure Pickles with Tea Mushroom and Bamboo Fungus:
Priced at RM25.90. Said to improve digestive system and eases gastric.

We ended with some Caramel Beancurd (RM5.90):
Nice and soft and refreshingly cool.

Pepper Lunch, Pavilion KL Food Review

Pepper lunch was a distant memory to me where I ate once and I never looked back anymore. But my recent visit to the Pavilion branch had triggered a memory in me to remind me of the name and the food it serves.
I stepped in to an almost empty place but the hungry lunch crowd started looming once noon came around and filled the place up pretty much.
It's familiar sight of sizzling hot plate with the caution paper around it jogs my memory of a nostalgic time where I ate with a childhood friend a few years back at Sunway Pyramid. I somehow remembered eating something with a sunny side up egg but can't recall what exactly the dish was. I just remembered that we first glanced at the menu, then walked around to look at other restaurants before finally settling with Pepper Lunch.

Moving back to the present, at the Pepper Lunch, Pavilion branch food review, I soon learn that the concept of Pepper Lunch is that you DIY your own meat on how well you want it to be cooked.
The hot plate is a unique cast iron plate that using a special electromagnetic cooker, the iron plate can heat up to 260 degrees Celsius in 70 seconds and remain hot at about 80 degrees Celsius for more than 20 minutes. The meat is served raw with it's other ingredients and will grill and sizzle upon the hot plate where the hot plate also serve the purpose of retaining the heat and keeping the food warm while you eat. Never knew that before this food review. No wonder they ask after serving on whether I know what to do with it and then instruct on cooking and mixing it up along with the sauces.

Ok, so let's start off with the Combo Deluxe. Here we have the Burger Steak & BBQ Beef Yakiniku:
It's priced at RM21.80. All Combo Deluxe comes with rice and you can request to add an egg by adding in RM1.50. Notice that the BBQ Beef Yakiniku is reddish. That's because it's served rare and when it sizzles and cooks away on the hot plate, later on, the BBQ Beef Yakiniku will be closer to brownish color. As for the Burger Steak, a special butter is put on top where you're supposed to spread it on and cook the burger steak to your desired meat temp. The beef they use to serve are Premium Australian Beef.

The chicken steak also has that special butter on top to spread and sizzle away on the hot plate. :)
Same price as the Burger Steak & BBQ Beef Yakiniku.

And finally, another Combo Deluxe which is the Salmon & Chicken:
It was being tossed away while I snapped this photo to be cooked hence a certain blurriness to it came about. This costs RM28.80

They also have their special sauce which I also recall trying when I ate at Pepper Lunch sometime back which is the Garlic Soy Sauce:
And the Honey Brown Sauce:
The Garlic Soy Sauce has a stirrer on the top of it's cover and it's for you to stir the contents so that the garlic residue do not stay at the bottom. Honey Brown Sauce has a light sweetness to it and as I recall back to my first visit to Pepper Lunch, it still has that same familiar taste when I ate those sauces. ^.^

This here is the Salmon Cream Pasta with Mushroom:
The one that we shared, we added Mozzarella Cheese into it (not the picture above). The price to add on cheese is an additional RM2.50. Otherwise, it would be RM19.80. With the cheese added in, it has added a much richer, creamier taste to it but could be too much for some people. Other than that, the taste was not bad.

Here are some of the side dishes at Pepper Lunch:
Mini Salad, Mashed Potato and Wakame Soup. With an addition of RM6 with the order of the main dish, you get a drink + either the soup, the salad, the mashed potato or the ice cream depending on your choice.

The person next to me had the Teriyaki Double Salmon which is priced at RM32.80:
Props to the Teriyaki sauce which creates a delightful taste when eaten with the Salmon. Best of the sauces that I've tasted at Pepper Lunch.

As for me, I went for the Japanese Curry Rice with Double Steak Burger:
I'm a sucker for Japanese curry. But more often than not, a lot of so-called Japanese restaurants in Malaysia do not serve Japanese curry up to the standard that I like. However, Pepper Lunch's Japanese curry is acceptable enough to me. I gleefully poured the curry on top of the rice and slops of it on the beef burger steak after spreading the butter on top.
It looks like an erupted volcano. Haha. A nice touch putting the Chili on top of the rice. Since Malaysians love spicy, eating the curry along with the chili provides a certain spiciness to it without compromising the taste of Japanese curry. My mistake though, with this dish is that I didn't sear the burgers enough to the level that I would love it to be while it was still sizzling hot. Still, it is quite a good dish. Costs RM23.80.

Here's another Japanese Curry dish. The Japanese Curry Rice with Seafood:
Same price with the dish I ordered but with the add-on egg of RM1.50.

Pepper Lunch reminded me of a memory in the corner of my mind which I never knew I had. Somehow, the activity of going to the outlet to try had awaken that trip I made to the Sunway Pyramid branch which goes down even to the detail of the taste of its food and sauce (by the way, it's the same in this outlet) but other than the visit to that restaurant, I had no recollection of what I did that day. Most likely it was a movie screening but don't remember for what movie.

Small Update On That Day

On another note which is unrelated and totally nothing to do with Pepper Lunch, after that fulfilling meal at Pepper Lunch, I head on down to Tropicana City Mall for Mbuji's coffee appreciation class.
Very different from the one I attended last time (
It lets us taste the different coffee of South America and Africa also their own special blends of coffee.
Right after that, we headed to the 3 Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf which I heard so much about but never step foot in it before. I couldn't resist and ordered the Crown Lager Beer because I've never tried it before:

It's an Australian 100% malt beer surprisingly quite tasty to me.
Me and Soo Yin tried out one of their burgers called The Governor:
It has a poached egg on it. It's nice but lacks the addictiveness to eat it again especially with that price range.

Well, that's about it in this short update of that day after I went to Pepper Lunch. :)

The Balcony, Ampang, KL Grand Opening

A day after a night of party, I went for The Balcony KL's grand launch located at Ampang.
An unusual move by me since I'm a person who's afraid of KL traffic what's more at a location which is known to be highly congested. Not to mentioned the aftermath of a downpour, I would've imagined a massive jam awaits me.

However, with the aid of my GPS, not only had I been guided to it's exact location but to my amazement also victoriously avoided any jam whatsoever.

The Balcony Bar & Grill is just that - a balcony!
Located on the upper floor of the building that it's in, it sports a chill-out approach hidden away from the famed busy street of Jalan Ampang to a somewhat remote, quiet area.
I spotted 2 of my friends already inside the place, the earlybirds! And I thought I was early.
After sitting down and having a chatter with the management of the joint, I learnt that even though this place had just opened, they're already in the process planning for the opening of another in Malacca this year! Talk about fast movers!
Anyway, the night grew darker dimming the lights of the evening sky even more as it progresses where invited guests trickled in filling up the space. As I sip away on coke and whiskey and some beer, the launch event finally got under way with lion dances opening up the grand launch.
Ah yes, the playfulness of the lion dancers, nudging on attendees and passing out items were quite a scene to witness since acrobatic stunts in enclosed space would not be an advisable thing to do.
Later, when the drums and the cymbals had played their role with the lion dancers, a fire eater/juggler/stuntman show had his turn:
A long interval ensued after some lucky draw prizes giveaway where I took the opportunity to say hi to some new friends along with acquaintances I haven't seen in awhile.
A fashion show was the last happening that I remembered seeing before I happily accepted my lucky draw prize of RM150 Food and Beverage voucher and call it a night.

Heineken Club Bottle Color Series Finale Party

Following its exciting unveiling during Milan Design Week 2013 and its Malaysian debut at Heineken Thirst, the exclusive and limited edition Heineken Club Bottle continues to redefine the after-dark drinking experience with the Heineken Color Series this March and April.
The Heineken Club Bottle was the centrepiece of Heineken’s Maggazzini installation at Milan Design Week. Maggazini was conceived as an experimental creative space that featured collaborations between the brand – world renowned for expanding the boundaries of creative culture – and leaders in the design world. This collection of pioneering designers, artists and publications included Designersblock, PechaKucha, Cool Hunting, Joshua Davis, Tuttobene and Heineken Club Bottle creator, Matt W. Moore.
“The Heineken Club Bottle is one of the latest in a series of global Heineken design initiatives,” comments Jessie Chuah, Heineken Marketing Manager. “In Malaysia, we have a long history of working closely with the creative community on cutting edge art projects. The Heineken Color Series enables us to bring those international and local elements together to create a new experience for our Malaysian consumers.”

In normal daylight the aluminium Heineken Club Bottle features a frosted geometric pattern framing a signature green star. After dark, under ultraviolet (UV) light a new story emerges. A new personality of startling fluorescent greens and blues shines through, vividly lighting up the club space to reveal a stunning piece of hand-held art.
Heineken Club Bottle designer Matt W. Moore is one of the most electrifying graphic designers and installation artists of the last ten years. A pioneer of the Vectorfunk style of graphic design, his work blurs the lines between technology and street art. His Monumental Murals can be found on walls in cities across the world while his work with brands includes collaborations with companies like Heineken and even a design takeover of technology zeitgeist publication Wired.
It was awhile back on April 5, 2014 to be exact where the finale party series were held at The Rabbit Hole, an exciting new concept bar and club on Changkat Bukit Bintang with DJs Fordy, Mizzkiya, Tres and Lapsap.
The place easily filled up with people that evening with it's limited space. I chatted away with my friend till the night got later and the morning came nearer. I then proceeded into the Green Room which ironically looks more white than green and is hidden behind heavy wooden doors. The DJ in there was playing some wicked good mixes which I could groove to. Inside the room were significantly fewer people in there but I didn't care. I was in my zone and I continued on partying and pretty soon became a little party starter with people all around the room staring at me move to the beat where they too are inspired to dance along.
A foreign guy soon came in the room and took noticed of a sexy girl at the back of the room. But as I had foreseen, he was rejected hard by her but still had his chin up and some fun and even bought me another drink. LOL. The girl grooved in her own little world with occasional clinking of drinks and dances with me until I decided to call it quits.

Well, it was quite a fantastically fun party for me. Probably due to the fact that for the first time, I started the party going and cared nothing more but the great set that the DJ got me going. Hope to have more great parties like this in the future. :)

The Rising of Kirin Ichiban

Kirin Ichiban is now one of the beers in GAB's (Guinness Anchor Berhad) portfolio!
If you're unfamiliar with Kirin Ichiban, it is Japan's no. 1 100% Malt beer and is a premium quality beer that uses the innovative "First Press" brewing method or 'Ichiban Shibori' as it is known in Japan.
The "First Press" method is a brewing process that uses only the first pressed malt liquid, the clearest and purest strain of the malt. So only the finest ingredients are used in this process, exuding a crisper, richer and purer taste.
The momentous occasion was held with a Japanese-themed Cultural Festival type of event where it was officiated by Japan's Ambassador to Malaysia, His Excellency Makio Miyagawa. Yatai food stalls were setup where as you enter the hall, you'll have some Japanese cuisine for you to take to go with the Kirin Ichiban beer.

During the celebration, Bruce Dallas, GAB's Marketing Director, shared that the company is pleased to be able to add Kirin Ichiban into the brewer's portfolio as it further enhances the company's offering to Malaysian consumers.
Hans Essaadi, Managing Director of GAB, gave an opening speech prior to Bruce:
His Excellency, Makio Miyagawa, also said a few words on the super-premium beer at the event:
"I am delighted that a great product like Kirin Ichiban has been added to the portfolio of GAB, the leading brewer in Malaysia. This will provide further opportunity for Japanese culture to be showcased in Malaysia, particularly by generating further appreciation for Japanese food and drinks amongst Malaysians."
By the way, Kirin is a mythical creature that is half dragon, half deer with a tail of an ox, a symbol of wellbeing that symbolizes happiness.
Other features of the event include some dance performances:
Kirin Ichiban is GAB's first Japanese product in its portfolio and it is the company's first new brand in five years. With its addition, GAB plans to increase the distribution network of the 100% Malt, First Press beer giving consumers greater accessibility to the product. The company will also be bringing world class innovative engagements for consumers to experience and enjoy Kirin Ichiban.
