RIPD - Rest In Peace Department (2013) in 3D Movie Review

The show starts off with the lead actor Ryan Reynolds playing as Detective Nick Walker in action catching a "deado" which are beings who are dead but escaped from judgment and roams the earth. That was merely a sneak preview of what is to come and he rewinds back to before he was dead to tell his story.

Him and his partner Bobby Hayes are partners and after a bust on a drug ring, they discovered some broken gold artifact pieces and decided to take for themselves to enrich themselves. Nick buried his on the ground and put an orange tree on top of it.

While conversing with his partner the next morning from burying the gold, he tells his partner that he regrets his decision of keeping the gold and wants to turn it in back to the police station but swears that he will not bust his partner out.

After that, they went on a mission together with many other police officer and infiltrated a warehouse where a lot of shootouts were going on. Nick later cleared an area where his partner also shows up. But Bobby shot Nick dead saying that he can't allow Nick to turn in the gold.

When Nick wakes up, he finds a strange phenomenon going on where everything tend to be frozen in place and nothing at all is moving. He walks out of the place and sees an odd hole in the sky where he was sucked up a second later. While going upwards he see many other people being sucked up along as well.

He was then suddenly being seated in a chair in an office where in front of a desk is a woman seated in front of him and says he'll give him a moment to figure out what happened to him which he's dead. She then explains to him that he's been chosen to be in the RIPD due to his skillset instead of going straight to judgment like most people. The RIPD consists of the finest police personnel throughout the centuries recruited to catch deados.

Since Nick was from the Boston police force, he requested to be back in the Boston division. He was being partnered with Roy, a cowboy law enforcer of the 1800's. Roy showed the ropes to Nick on how to spot a deado. But before that, he took Nick to his funeral where he couldn't resist and tried to confront his wife. But later he found out that the living sees him as a different person and that if he tries to reveal who he is, it will just come out gibberish. He's persona where the living see him as is an old Chinese man while Roy is a hot, sexy woman.

When they busted a deado, Nick was curious as to why the deado was in possession of the same type of gold artifact pieces that he and his partner took and why would the deado tried to stash with him when he was escaping? This sparked Nick's curiosity and wanted Roy to take him to his informant.

Roy's informant didn't help much on the information and that's where Nick bait him by giving him a piece of the gold artifact and told him to contact him when he has any info on it. But Nick just really wanted to see what the informant do with it.

One thing led to another and pretty soon, he realized that his partner was also a deado and is after the gold artifacts all along and am gathering all the pieces for something big. But for what? Watch the movie to find out!

The movie is more of a drama than an action show or a comedy but there are good action moments and light comedy which are quite funny. The effects too were good at some instances but sometimes, logic seems to be failing. Then again, this is not a thinking movie but just a sit back and enjoy the show kind. The 3D effects were unnecessary. I don't see how watching this show in 3D enhances the experience or make this a better show. But I'd give em a 3.5 stars out of 5.

Fun fact!
1) RIPD is based on the comic book Rest In Peace Department which is published by Dark Horse Entertainment.
2) The person who played Roy's avatar, a hot sexy lady is Marisa Miller and it's her first time acting in a big screen movie. She's a model who's most associated with Victoria's Secret and has been with Victoria's Secret ever since it's inception.
3) Nick's avatar, the old Chinese guy is James Hong who has nearly six decades of his acting career which includes TV shows like 'I Dream of Jeannie' and 'The X-Files' and has a wide array of movie types from comedic silly ones like Wayne's World 2 to a serious disaster movie like 'The Day The Earth Stood Still'
4) In Japan, the movie is called Ghost Agent - RIPD.

I did not go for this as I was afraid it would be too complicated or scary for Ethan.. but I guess nothing is scary here kan? :(

It's a comedy. It's not suppose to be scary except maybe some of the hideous looks that they made up. But the storyline may be a bit too complicated for Ethan to follow.

Well, let's put it this way. It's not gonna be too memorable and the logic has loads of fallacy in it but if you just watch it and not think so much, it can be quite enjoyable to watch. :)
