Battleship (2012) Movie Review

The story is about humans sending signals to a far distant planet in another galaxy that has similar traits with earth making it a planet that's ideal for inhabitants like humans. This however, triggered a response from alien fleets which traveled to earth to scout out. In the course of landing into earth, they somehow crashed landed instead.

In the meantime, Alex Hopper was an unemployed but talented man. On his birthday, he did something silly by going after a girl in a bar ignoring his brother's advice to not do so. Although his attempt to woo the girl (whom he later found out is the Navy's Admiral's daughter) was successful, it ended up a night of being tasered and waking up in a tub of ice cold water back in his brother's place the next morning. His brother couldn't take his slacking anymore and forces him to join the US Navy.

Pretty soon, during a RIMPAC exercise where Alex takes command of one of the Naval battleship, one of the big alien spacecraft landed on the sea where the fleets were nearby. Fascinated of how it seems to be jamming their radars and curious about it, some went to take a closer look. In the course of doing so, they had triggered the alien spacecraft and a sort of forcefield had covered the surrounding area trapping the fleets that were participating with the alien craft. Out of panic, they started attacking the ship but were of course outgunned by the superior technology of the alien craft. This ended with his brother and his fleet getting killed and Alex had to take charge of those that were left. It turned into a battle to outwit the aliens before earth is swarmed by aliens.

*WARNING. A bit of spoilers in the next paragraph*
Actually, to tell you the truth, I don't quite understand the storyline because it's quite confusing in the beginning. I also don't get the part on why in the beginning, a damaged alien ship can take hits fired by the battleships as if it's ants throwing puny matchsticks at a human foot while towards the end, it's so easily destroyed. I also don't get the part of the water displacement technique where they use the buoys as radar because aren't they suppose to fire at the spot BEFORE the alien craft reach the buoy which displaces the water over there giving away their coordinates? But it seems to me they only fire AFTER they reach the buoy which logically wouldn't the craft be long gone by the time their shots reach the area?

Anyway, it has cool effects even though I feel that the storyline sucks real bad. But considering the fact that it's based JUST on the simple classic game with the same name, Battleship, it is quite creative to brew up a story out of nothing much to go on. So with that, I give it 3.5 stars out of 5. Note that many people actually love the movie but somehow it's not as much to my liking.

A lot of people really find it a nice show but to me the storyline just kills it a bit.

Should they come up with a better storyline, with it's great effects, I bet it will be a really great movie.
