7 Japanese Words A Week - December 28, 2009

Since it's holiday season, let's take a look at some greetings. :)

1) Happy New Year! - akemashite omedetou (gozaimasu)!
** Adding in the gozaimasu makes it a formal conversation. Should do this to superiors or older persons**
2) Hello (on the phone) - moshi moshi
** Many people who's learning Japanese makes the mistake of saying this face to face. Moshi moshi is only for saying hello on the phone, not face to face.**
3) Goodbye - sayonara (さよなら)
4) See you later - jaa, mata ne
5) Good evening - konbanwa (今晩は, こんばんは)
note the ha (は) instead of wa (わ) at the end, but it's read as wa in this instance.**
6) How are you? - ogenki desu ka? (
7) Good night - oyasumi(nasai) (
**With close friends you can omit the nasai at the end.**
